Get to know this years' Gee-Gees

Coaching Staff
Ken Alexander: He builds houses by day, and coaches womens ultimate frisbee by night, this being his second year as our head coach. When he's not coaching us, Ken is typically an offensive cutter, wearing the #10. Most recently he has played for Phoenix (Ottawa Open), GOAT (Toronto Open) and is currently the co-captain of Ottawa's newest co-ed team, poised to contend at CUC2011, Trainwreck. Ken has been an extraordinary asset for the Gee-Gees, as a great teacher and leader for our team. His knowledge of the game is amazing and his passion for developing our team has led to so much transfer from his teaching to  our on-field game.

Viviane Bartlett: She says she's really six feet tall, and so we call her "Big". Big started playing ultimate at McGill university, then moved to Australia for a couple years, and came back to uOttawa to play with the Gee-Gees, pursuing a License in Civil law and a Bachelor of International Development and Globalization . While rostering mistakes make her ineligible for this USAU college series, we are delighted to invite Big to help out as an assistant coach for the rest of the Gee-Gees USAU season. On her own teams, you'll see her as a defensive cutter, grinding it out in the lanes and wearing the #13.

Team
Aleksandra Ostojic: Aleks started playing ultimate for the Gee-Gees this year, after playing with Ottawa club team Scarlett, and plays as a cutter for the Gee-Gees. She has developed the instincts to know where to go on offense to get the disc, and once it's in her hands has the confidence to get it safely to the continuation. Aleks, who wears jersey #11, has recently stepped up to the plate on offense and defense, finding that determination to get under every disc that's floating in the air. Aleks is in her 3rd year of a BSc. Honours in Biochemistry with Minor in Business Administration.

Aline Pfefferle: Das Boot hails from Germany - her Gee-Gees jersey reads die Nummer drei (#3). Being switched from a cutter to a handler this year, her 2nd year on the Gee-Gees team, has proven her to be successful in whatever role she is put in. Although she's been out for the majority of the season with an ACL injury, recent surgery gives us a strong hope that she'll be on the field again next year. Until then, Das Boot has been at every practice doing whatever she can, and getting even better throws than before! Aline has been strong sideline support and stats keeper for the team, holding us accountable for our on-field mistakes.  Aline is in her 3rd year of a BSc. Honours in Biopharmaceutical Sciences with Genomics Option.

Alisha Zhao: We call her Boo because she looks like the little girl from Monsters Inc... but don't let that innocent little smile fool you. This gal has a rocket back hidden under her jersey or something for SURE.  A rookie last year to the sport of ultimate, this is also only Alisha's 2nd year playing ultimate with the Gee-Gees. Boo has developed money throws, and loves to strike deep for the score. Alisha wears the #2 on her jersey, but always strives to be numba oooone! Alisha will be graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce, with a specialization in Accounting.

Anna Revzine: Anna is a first year player on the Gee-Gees team, and if every player had as much determination as Anna has there would be no end to what our team could do. An aggressive defensive cutter, #14 will be the gal going all out for every disc in her path. Anna has improved so much in the few months that she's been playing, she just needs to decrease her gym frequency so that she stops piping it out the back of the field ; ) Anna is in her second year of her Honours B.A. with a Specialization in French-English Translation.

Anne Mercier: Merc has been around the ultimate scene than most who have 10 years  on her. Anne wears the #5 on most of her jerseys (which is also the number of years she's played on the Gee-Gees team) although you'll have seen her sporting #89 depending on which Team Canada team you're talking about. Most recently she's played for club teams Capitals, Stella and Lotus. Anne, a 3-year former captain, is a handler for the Gee-Gees and a dominant force in the womens game. Big throws, domination in the sky, and inside-out knowledge of the rules of the game make Merc a huge asset to the Gee-Gees. Anne will be graduating this year with a Bachelor of Commerce, specialization in Finance.

Brianna Jaffray: BJ is a now a masters student playing her 3rd year on the Gee-Gees team, and has most recently played for club team Stella. She is a ballin' handler, with sweet reset cuts and great throws. She is stealthy, and knows where to go to be dangerous with the disc. Don't let looks deceive you - #89 may be small and covered in sunscreen, but when she gets the disc BJ will break you like mad, or make you fall over with her fakes. Brianna is pursuing her Masters in Human Kinetics, specialization in Sport Management.

Éloïse Clément: Elo (heey-ooooooo!) is playing for the Gee-Gees for her second year. She steps on the field as a handler for the O or D line. Wearing #24, Elo has a saaa-weeeet backhand bomb, and also plays extremely well as the swing-handler against a zone defense. She is also, by far, the most gangsta girl on the team! Eloise will be graduating this year from an Bachelor degre in General Sciences.

Emma Burns: Emma has joined us from Halifax, NS to play her first year on the Gee-Gees team. Most recently she has played for club teams Stella and Salty. She is an O-line handler and wears #67 on the field. She has a mean short game in man or zone offense, and will break you if you're not careful. Someone call a doctor! But seriously, Emma is on her way to becoming a Doctor, pursuing her Fellowship in Pediatric Emergency Medicine.

Gabrielle Robineau-Charette: This french-speaking Aylmer resident started playing ultimate last year, and has improved leaps and bounds since then! Most recently Gab played for club team Stella. A second year player on the Gee-Gees team, Gab is a lefty who throws with her right hand instead, and loves her break backhand. But even more, she loves fitness! And running! You'll often see #7 striking deep for the point or keeping pace with her check on defense, no matter how fast they are. Her attitude is amazing, and she always wants to give more! Gab will be graduating this year with a Bachelor in Environmental Sciences.

Heather Andruff: Heather is a first year player on the Gee-Gees. She wears the #18 on her jerseys, and plays the position of a D-line handler. She's aggressive in taking away the in's when covering downfield, and is quick to get the mark on when guarding a handler. Heather is always asking questions, which go to further her knowledge about the game. At school, Heather is pursuing her PhD in Experimental Psychology.

Heather Smith: Smitty, hailing from North Bay, is a first-year player on the Gee-Gees. She wears the #26 on her jerseys, and is on the field as a defensive cutter. She grinds on D to stay with her check, and on offense Smitty' been improving so quickly with her throws and her field sense.  In addition to being a great teammate, what's cooler than a girl who can do numerous chin-ups, drive fire trucks, and fights forest fires? We'll miss Smitty from the end of April onwards, but expect she'll be in North Bay throwing with the wind and waiting for next year. Heather is in her third year of a BSc in Nursing in French Immersion.

Jahleel Bonaobra: Jello is from Toronto, and has a frisbee background playing for the Toronto Juniors program, most recently Overdrive. Starting out her first year playing with the Gee-Gees as a cutter, Jello has quickly transitioned into a handler with her money throws and her speed. Jello wears #71 on the field, and you'll see her playing both O and D. Jahleel is in her first her of her Bsc Nursing in French Immersion.

Jenna Atchison: Transitioning from being a handler to being a cutter this year, Jenna is playing on the Gee-Gees team for her second year. At 6 feet tall she is an asset in the lanes on the D-line, providing a big target for a strike or for in-cuts. #57 also has a long throw to match her stature.  Most recently Jenna has played for club team Scarlett, and has gotten some Australian ultimate in as well! Jenna is pursuing her Masters of Education, Concentration in Teaching, Learning and Evaluation.

Kathryn Pohran: This is Kpoh's 4th year playing and 2nd year captaining the Gee-Gees. On the field she wears the #10, for the Gee-Gees and same goes for club teams Capitals, Stella and Lotus. You'll find her as one of the primary cutters on the O-line, dominating the lanes and the sky, and sometimes handling on the D line. Watch out for those big bombs! If those don't come out, you'll probably think they did anyways... Kathryn will be graduating with an Honours Bachelor of Science in Human Kinetics this year.

Kaylee Sparks: Kaylee is a 2nd year player, first-time captain of the Gee-Gees. Although she's a young'un, she has a lot of experience playing for club team Stella, and some junior Worlds experience to boot! Kaylee's a cutter, playing on both the O and the D line. When you get her riled up - WATCH OUT OTHER TEAM - this speedy little ball of fury will dominate, and all you'll see is that #19 on her back as she runs by you. Kaylee is in her 2nd year of her BA honours, with specialization in French-English Translation.

Kristina Cowan: A late-recruit, #23 Kristina Cowan has made the switch from playing soccer to joining the ultimate ranks! Kristina brings speed, aggression, and a strong desire to learn and improve to the team. Playing as a D-line cutter, look for this gal to be right on your heels and getting the mark on, or getting a run-through D on you. Don't stop and stare, cuz she'll take off! Kristina is in her first year of her Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry.

Laura Evgin: Laura is in her 2nd year of playing with the Gee-Gees. Transitioning from a handler to a cutter, Laura plays on the O-line. Her consistent throws and good throw choices are coupled with a great field sense, which makes #16 dangerous on the field. Most recently she has played for club team Stella. Off the field, Laura is the queen of remembering teammates birthdays, and is a superb baker - coincidence? I think not! Our team will bet her cupcakes would win any bake-off she entered! Laura is pursuing a Masters of Science with a specialization in Biochemistry.

Louise Guolla: Louise is playing her 3rd year on the Gee-Gees team as a cutter, sporting #17 on her jerseys, and she's most recently played for club team Stella. Lou plays on both the D line, where she has such strength and speed that she denies her player getting the disc, and the O line. Give her the word and she'll dominate the lanes for you! Outside of frisbee, this Masters in Physics with a Specialization in Biophysics student is also a choral singer, and knows almost any tune you do!

Meaghan Labrecque: Meaghan started playing ultimate and with the Gee-Gees this year, sporting jersey #8. She is a handler on the team and loves her flick - short throws and long bombs. Outside of frisbee, you'll find her having breakfast at FnS or in the lab. Meaghan will be graduating this year with a Bachelor of Science Honours, with specialization in Biomedical Science.

Micaela Caza: With her head in the books, we just couldn't get her out last year, but this year there was no stopping MiCaza from playing ultimate! Most recently Micaela's played for club team Scarlett. A first year player on the Gee-Gees team, #31 plays mostly as a D line cutter, grinding in the lanes and getting run through D's. She's a silent weapon, but even though she's quiet she plays LOUD! She is in her second year of her Bachelor of Civil Engineering.

Sonia Komenda: Komz is a co-captain of the Gee-Gees, and a 5th year player. When she's not coming up with absurd cheers to pump up the team, or spitting on people (j/k! but not really!), you'll find her wearing the #15 on the field. Sonia most recently has played for club teams Capitals, Stella and Lotus. Keep running to that disc or she'll layout past you for the D, and then continue to break you with her lefty throws. Sonia will be graduating with a degree in International Development this year.

Stephanie Mandal: Hailing from Toronto, this nurse-in-training plays as a handler on the Gee-Gees team. Most recently playing with club team Stella, Rock has developed a strong sense of the game, and has great instincts of where to go on the field. You'll catch this 5'1" player laying out for D's on girls who are way taller than her. Although small, #4 has a big vertical (most renowned for her star-like jumps), and has killer bail cuts. Steph is in her 3rd year of her BSC in Nursing.

Tessa Van Leeuwen: TNT is playing her first year on the Gee-Gees ultimate team, but is not a stranger to playing for the Gee-Gees. A former varsity volleyball player, Tessa's got height and ups! But that's not all - she's super fast, and has recently gotten dirty laying out on D and on O. TNT's stepped up and proved that she can play on the D-line and the O-line. As a third-year student, we can't wait to see what #21 is gonna bring with a little more experience! Tessa is in her 3rd year of a Bachelor in Human Kinetics, Science stream.

Veronica SantosBesides her love of science and UFC, Ve loves ultimate frisbee. An old-time Ottawa Juniors player, Ve has re-entered the sport in her last year of school to play some frisbee again!  She is a first year player on the team. This  Gee-Gees handler sports #6 on her jerseys, which you'll  see as she busts up the line for the reset. And while she's a lefty, this wiley handler prefers to throw with her right hand. Veronica will be graduating this year with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry with a Minor in Gerontology.

Vivianne Fortin: A first-year student and first year player on the Gee-Gees, we were lucky enough to entice Ninja to play on the team at the beginning of the year. And after our kick-off party, she really had no reason to say no! Playing as a defensive cutter, Viv sports the #29. She makes big defensive plays, and gets under every disc she can. Learning SO quickly with her throws, Ninja has a stellar backhand that she'll use on the open side or the break. She's a huge mark, and is quick with her feet - yeaaaah footblocks! Vivianne is in her first year of her Bachelor in Human Kinetics, Science stream.
